When our move towards organizing the 28th Sonarpur Book Fair 2017 (Sonarpur Boimela 2017), begins, our planning and thinking are again focused on Malda. Medinipur West (Paschim Medinipur) was the theme of 27th Sonarpur Book Fair, and Malda is that of the 28th Sonarpur Book Fair. So last year’s trail cannot drift away right now from this part of Bengal.
SONAPUR, the golden city, has been the bulging center of some prolonged socio political movements since the dawn of Bengali Renaissance. It is a great privilege to walk on this soil. We take the onus of the tradition and feel the strength and courage to go with the journey so destined. That is what 'Sonarpur Club Samannay Sammilani', our organization, precisely stands for. We are privileged to tell you that apart from other key activities, we have the most covetable success of organizing 'Sonarpur Book Fair' for twenty-seven successive years since 1989. The fair has already been acclaimed & acknowledged as one of the most prodigious events in the state by the media and the people at large. Some hundred thousands of book lovers converge in from the entire district, and a good number from the neighboring districts as well. This ten-day festivity, by and large, is a composite reflection of life and learning. This is our 28th year SONARPUR BOOK FAIR commences on 8 December, 2017 evening and continues till the night of 17th December, 2017.
Malda district is a district in West Bengal, India. It lies 347 km (215 miles) north of Kolkata, the state capital. Mango, jute and silk are the most notable products of this district. The special variety of mango produced in this region, popularly known by the name of the district, is exported across the world and is acclaimed internationally. The folk culture of gombhira is a feature of the district, being a unique way of representation of joy and sorrow of daily life of the common people, as well as the unique medium of presentation on national and international matters.
District headquarters is English Bazar, also known as Malda, which was once the capital of Bengal. The district maintains the traditions of the past in culture and education. Old Malda, the town which lies just east of the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers, is part of the English Bazar urban agglomeration. The town rose to prominence as the river port of the old capital of Pandua.
During the 18th century it was the seat of prosperous cotton and silk industries. It remains an important distributing centre for rice, jute, and wheat. The area between the historical monument of Jame Masjid (1566) and the landmark of Nimasarai tower across the river Mahananda, constituted a municipality in 1867.
We can not remain forgetful of the Gour in the history of Bengal, and that of India as well. Ancient Gour and Pandua (Pundrabardhana) was geographically placed in this district. The two cities had been the capital of the Bengal in ancient and Megeivlages and are equidistance, North & South, from English Bazar Town.
