When our move towards organizing the 27th Sonarpur Book Fair 2016 (Sonarpur Boimela 2016), begins, our planning and thinking are again focused on Medinipur. Medinipur East (Purba Medinipur) was the theme of 26th Sonarpur Book Fair, and Medinipur West (Paschim Medinipur) is that of the 27th Sonarpur Book Fair. So last year’s trail cannot drift away right now from this part of Bengal.
onfident and resolute as we are already committed to take the onus and the challenge thereof. Medinipur was considered to be the most militant, yet most resolute face, of Indian freedom struggle. Some of the most valiant sons of India were born here and they wrote the glorious chapter of freedom struggle. And now, though the district is administratively divided into east and west since 2002, the glory and grandeur, the unique heritage is indivisible. So as the trailnow leads to the other part of the once undivided district, we cannot remain indifferentto this uniqueness.
Besides those golden and heroic days of Quit India Movement, Medinipur has also had a long and rich heritage ofculture with its folk festivals and folklores. While speaking particularly of West Medinipur, we cannot stay forgetful of the fact that it is enviably rich with human resources. To be specific, it has been the homeland of some of the oldest tribal folks of India. They are Santal, Munda, Kol, Mahali, Lodha, and some other groups as well who made the west part of Medinipur exceptionally unique with diversity and togetherness. All these groups even having their own way of living, own belief and practices, different deities and dialects, are closely juxtaposed. They, as a matter fact, are sometimes blended together in a harmonious whole.
From time immemorial, this very land nurtured a broad mixed culture which has richly and almost un-interruptedly evolved over time. We have been listening Gajan, Tusu, Bandhana, Shohray, for long. These songs are associated with different festivals and, obviously, sung in different seasons. Needless to say, tribal peoples are an integral part of this wide-ranging culture. Likewise, theyalso throng the arena of folkdances like KathiNach, RumalNach, Jhumur, Ran-pa, Chau, etc.
And, above all, the legendary village of Birsingha is in this very part of the state. This is the village where Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, the Renaissance man and Social reformer, was born. He was the man who set out first with the journey to modernity. We the Bengalese could hardly attain manhood had he then not taken so much pain in introducing modern education, and effecting social reformation.
So, apart from getting into the general features of a district, we have a vast area to explore. Otherwise, we cannot have a presentable replica of the theme district in our Book Fair. Hence, the onus is big; the challenge is bigger. But keeping all successive success of the previous years in view, we feel c Let us tell our viewers that the 27th Sonarpur Book Fair begins on 9TH December, and the festivity will conclude on 18TH December, 2016. The theme of the year is “PaschimMedinipur”. A fore-view of the ten day festivity shall be added here very shortly.Exhibition on West Medinipur – this will be a fantastic collage of pictures, models, documents, etc. as to how the city was born, the long journey from a trivial settlement to present day metropolis, old landscapes, old architecture
